In January 2024, there was a case in Hyderabad against top members of Daggubati family like actors Venkatesh with Rana Daggubati, Abhiram Daggubati, and producer Suresh Babu. The case revolves around the illegal demolition of the Deccan Kitchen, which is located on the land at Jubilee Hills owned by the Daggubati family.
Background:
K. Nandakumar, the owner of Deccan Kitchen, rented the space from the Daggubati family starting in 2014, renewing it several times through the years. He says he spent close to ₹20 crore doing up the place. Nandakumar claimed that with a valid lease agreement in place, and secured court injunctions preventing him from vacating the premises, the Daggubati family tried to illegally take possession of the property.
Allegations:
Illegal Demolition: He alleges that the family along with officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and local police, in conspiracy with each other, demolished Deccan Kitchen in November 2022, when he was in judicial custody and in complete violation of prevailing orders of the court.
• Theft and Vandalism: The complaint is that valuables including furniture were removed from the home during the demolition for a loss of money. Nandakumar estimates the damage to be around ₹20 crore.
• Intimidation and Threats: Akash alleges that the family hired around 60 private bouncers to assist in the demolition and to intimidate him and his family members, threatening to throw them out of the premises.
Legal Proceedings:
On a petition filed by Nandakumar, the Nampally Court acknowledged the allegations and directed the filing of a criminal case against Venkatesh, Suresh Babu, Rana, and Abhiram. The cases which were registered to the accused involved numerous under sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), which include sections 448, 452, 458 and 120(B), all of which charge the accused with trespassing, criminal conspiracy, theft and intimidation respectively.
The accused have been called to appear before the court for hearings, the next of which is slated for July 14, 2024. The alleged role of the Daggubati family in the demolition and their failure to adhere to legalities has opened them to scrutiny as the investigation progresses.
Current Status:
As of January 2025, the case is still considered an ongoing investigation, and legal proceedings were still taking place. The Daggubati family hasn’t publicly responded to the allegations.
